The recent launch of the Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite, named ‘Foresight-1,’ marks a significant milestone in reinforcing the UAE’s global leadership in the space sector, as highlighted by Bayanat, a leading AI-powered geospatial solutions provider and a subsidiary of G42.
Hasan Al Hosani, Managing Director of Bayanat, shared with the Emirates News Agency (WAM) that the launch of Foresight-1 places the UAE among an elite group of 20 nations worldwide that operate SAR space assets. This achievement not only strengthens the UAE’s position in the space sector but also enhances its growing capabilities in this field.
Strategic Roadmap for Space Expansion
Al Hosani explained that Bayanat, in collaboration with Al Yah Satellite Communications Company (Yahsat), has developed a strategic roadmap focused on deploying a constellation of satellites equipped with SAR technology. This plan builds upon the initial announcement of the Earth Observation Space Programme in 2023, with Foresight-1 being the first satellite to be launched under this initiative.
“Following the successful launch of Foresight-1, we are now equipped to operate space assets capable of repeatedly covering the Middle East region in record time,” Al Hosani stated.
He highlighted that Foresight-1’s key advantage lies in its ability to provide continuous, high-resolution monitoring solutions through SAR technology. Unlike traditional optical imaging satellites, SAR satellites can capture images day or night, in any weather conditions, making them invaluable for various applications.
Enhanced Geospatial Solutions and Future Merger
This advanced technology is set to improve the quality of geospatial solutions and services offered by Bayanat and Yahsat, particularly in areas such as disaster management, marine monitoring, and smart mobility applications. Furthermore, Al Hosani noted that Emirati citizens have played a crucial role in this initiative, with more than 30% of the Earth Observation Space Programme being led by Emiratis, demonstrating a strong commitment to developing national expertise in this vital sector.
Regarding the anticipated merger between Bayanat and Yahsat, Al Hosani expressed optimism that the merger would be finalized by the end of this year, pending final approvals from regulatory authorities in the UAE and internationally. The merger is expected to establish “Space42” as a leading Emirati company with a global footprint in the space sector, aligning with the UAE’s National Space Strategy 2030.
Al Hosani emphasized that Space42 will continue to advance the goals of the National Space Strategy 2030, supporting the UAE’s efforts to enhance its space capabilities, bolster national security, foster innovation, encourage international cooperation, drive economic growth, and contribute to urban development through cutting-edge space technology.
