The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has successfully upgraded and reactivated its Web Management System (WMS) as part of intensified efforts to combat illegal mobile applications, websites, and online content. This upgrade has enabled PTA to take more robust actions against digital platforms that violate national regulations.
Since the upgrade, the WMS has blocked 183 mobile applications deemed unlawful, along with 2,369 websites hosting prohibited content. The system’s enhanced capabilities allow for effective monitoring of online content, ensuring swift action against platforms breaching Pakistan’s digital regulations.
The upgraded WMS is a key component of PTA’s broader strategy to regulate the digital space, ensuring that internet usage across the country aligns with legal and ethical standards. This initiative further strengthens PTA’s oversight and enforcement capabilities, reinforcing its role in safeguarding Pakistan’s digital ecosystem.
In parallel, the PTA has initiated a comprehensive cybersecurity audit for telecom operators to enhance cybersecurity across the nation. This audit aims to ensure the robustness of cyber defenses within the telecom sector.
World-class companies have been tasked with conducting these audits, focusing on a thorough review of all technical aspects related to cybersecurity. The PTA will conduct the final evaluation to confirm that all measures meet international standards.
Key areas of focus for the audit include:
- Assessing whether telecom operators have effectively implemented the prescribed cybersecurity framework and verifying the presence of necessary firewalls.
- Reviewing the security clearance of staff members working for telecom operators to ensure that only vetted individuals handle sensitive information.
- Scrutinizing measures taken by telecom operators to prevent the leakage of user data, ensuring the security of personal and sensitive information.
This dual effort by PTA underscores its commitment to bolstering digital regulation and cybersecurity, ensuring a safer and more secure online environment in Pakistan.
