Oman continues to prioritize the integration of information and communication technology (ICT) in its development strategies, recognizing its importance in building smart societies. A recent survey conducted by the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI) assessed the access and use of ICT among Omani families and individuals, revealing key insights into the nation’s digital landscape.
According to the survey, 68% of individuals aged 18 and older use a desktop or laptop computer. Additionally, 83% of respondents utilize the Internet for electronic financial transactions, such as paying utility bills or completing other online payments. Notably, 98% of Omani households have Internet access, despite an 11% decline in desktop or laptop ownership among household members.
Oman places great emphasis on leveraging ICT to drive societal development and enhance infrastructure. The ICT sector is seen as vital in creating job opportunities for the younger generation while fostering overall progress. The Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology leads the charge in implementing e-government strategies, aiming to improve public sector efficiency and advance the nation towards a digitally-driven society.
The growing global trend of e-government services that prioritize citizens’ well-being, save time, and reduce administrative burdens aligns with Oman’s own initiatives. These services are offered through multiple channels, ensuring accessibility for all citizens.
With a significant rise in Internet usage for research, work, and accessing information and services, Oman’s ICT sector has shown considerable growth in recent years. The data collected from this survey will play a critical role in shaping policies to further develop the sector and meet the evolving needs of Omani households and individuals.
Furthermore, these findings will update Oman’s position in international databases, such as those maintained by the United Nations and the International Telecommunication Union, helping to showcase the nation’s advancements in ICT and improve its global rankings.
