During the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, Egypt’s Information Technology Industry Development Agency (ITIDA) and China signed five major memoranda of understanding (MoUs) totaling $1.1 billion.
Wuhan FiberHome International Technologies will establish a factory in Egypt to produce fiber optic cables, communication devices, and base station antennas, with plans to manufacture 1 million core kilometers of fiber annually. The project also includes setting up an R&D center for optical networks and green technology, as well as a training center in collaboration with Egypt’s ICT Ministry.
Hengtong Group is investing $15 million to build a second factory in the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone). The facility will produce fiber optic cables and accessories, with 40 percent of the output exported to Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Hengtong will also partner with Telecom Egypt and the National Telecommunications Institute to provide training programs.
ZTE has committed to producing telecommunications products locally and will collaborate with ITIDA to establish two training labs, aiming to train 1,200 participants over the next three years.
State-owned Tsinghua Unigroup will launch a technology investment fund with an initial capital of $300 million, focusing on data centers, cloud services, and AI applications, particularly for Arabic. The agreement also includes a research initiative on electronic chip design.
Huawei Egypt is set to open a Development Center this year, which will focus on industry solutions, developer training, and building a cloud computing ecosystem. The center aims to train 1,500 developers and certify 500 by 2025.
