Huawei and UNESCO Launch Phase II of the Technology-Enabled Open Schools Initiative

During UNESCO’s Digital Learning Week, Huawei announced the implementation of Phase II of the Technology-enabled Open Schools for All project, a collaboration with UNESCO that aims to digitally transform education in Brazil, Egypt, and Thailand. This phase, which runs from 2024 to 2027, builds on the successful completion of Phase I and focuses on integrating digital open school models that blend technology with human capabilities to create adaptable and inclusive learning environments.

The announcement was made at the Technology-enabled Open Schools for All Forum, where the achievements of the first phase, which involved Egypt, Ethiopia, and Ghana from 2020 to 2024, were discussed. These insights will guide the next steps in the three new participating countries.

The forum was attended by key figures, including Egypt’s Minister of Education, Mohamed Abdel Latif, and representatives from Brazil, Thailand, Ghana, and Ethiopia, highlighting the global importance of the initiative. They discussed how Phase I had led to significant educational advancements in their countries and expressed optimism about the future impacts of Phase II.

Huawei’s TECH4ALL digital inclusion program supports this initiative, focusing on connecting schools, enhancing ICT skills among educators, and developing digital educational resources. Joyce Liu, Director of the TECH4ALL Program Office at Huawei, emphasized that the project aims to create equitable and inclusive access to education through technology, connectivity, and content.

In Brazil, the Open School project will align with the nation’s Connected Schools Strategy to promote inclusive and environmentally conscious learning. Thailand’s project will concentrate on enhancing well-being in education through the development of smart schools and classrooms, alongside significant ICT training for educators.

Egypt will continue to build on the successful training programs from Phase I, focusing on expanding ICT skills among teachers to further enrich the educational landscape.
