The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) recently released the E-Government Survey 2024, which marked significant advancements for Bahrain in the realm of e-government development. Bahrain has leaped 36 positions to secure the 18th spot globally in the E-Government Development Index (EDGI).
This remarkable progress is attributed to Bahrain’s robust technical infrastructure and its impressive performance across various sub-indices. The Kingdom made notable strides in the Telecommunications Infrastructure Index (TII), soaring 55 spots to rank 10th globally, a testament to its successful telecom liberalization and the enhancement of broadband and fiber internet services.
Bahrain also improved markedly in the E-Participation Index, moving up 47 places to 18th, and made a substantial jump of 31 places in the Online Service Index (OSI) to rank 23rd worldwide. These achievements reflect Bahrain’s commitment to providing a unified platform for comprehensive eServices and driving overall digital transformation.
In addition, Bahrain’s Human Capital Index saw an advancement of 33 positions, reaching 32nd place. This improvement stems from collaborative efforts between the Information & eGovernment Authority (iGA) and the Ministry of Education, bolstered by training and certification initiatives such as the Technical Development Program in partnership with the Ministry of Labour.
Manama, Bahrain’s capital, also gained recognition, ranking 13th among 193 cities globally, moving up 12 positions. This enhancement in city ranking further underscores Bahrain’s progress in e-services, which has been a focal point of the iGA’s efforts to refine the National Portal, bahrain.bh, and other digital platforms to enrich user experiences.
The UN E-Government Survey 2024 serves as both a benchmark and a roadmap for Bahrain, guiding its continuous efforts to fortify its infrastructure, communications, information technology, and human capital, positioning the Kingdom as a leading digital nation.
