Oman has officially launched its National Programme for Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Advanced Digital Technologies, aimed at boosting the role of ICT in the country’s economy and aligning with Vision 2040 goals. The programme, unveiled by HE Saeed bin Hamood al Mawali, Minister of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology, aims to integrate AI across all sectors, localize advanced technologies, and enhance Oman’s global AI readiness rankings.
The initiative builds on earlier efforts from 2022, demonstrating the government’s dedication to developing a robust digital economy that supports sustainable growth. Key targets include increasing the digital economy’s contribution to GDP from 2% in 2021 to 10% by 2040 and improving Oman’s position on the global Government AI Readiness Index.
A national open data platform will serve as the programme’s foundation, supporting entrepreneurs, investors, and decision-makers. Further initiatives, set for 2024–2026, will align Oman with global advancements in AI, while the programme will also introduce AI and data analysis training in schools to equip future generations with essential digital skills.
The initiative will establish a national AI research center, promote emerging technologies, and develop an Omani language model powered by generative AI. In partnership with the World Economic Forum, Oman will also create a center for Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies and launch quantum computing initiatives.
HE Dr Ali al Shidhani, Undersecretary for Communications and Information Technology, emphasized the programme’s importance in driving economic growth, integrating AI into various sectors, and localizing these technologies within Oman. The programme underscores Oman’s commitment to digital transformation and AI adoption across industries, positioning the nation for future economic success.
