Tunisia is making significant strides in enhancing its digital infrastructure as part of a national strategy to extend high-speed network coverage and drive digital transformation across various sectors. Sofiene Hemissi, the Tunisian Minister of Communication Technologies, emphasized the critical role of 5G technology in this advancement, highlighting the government’s commitment to leveraging it as a catalyst for economic growth.
Recently, the country marked a pivotal moment in its tech evolution as the three main telephone service providers—Tunisie Telecom, Ooredoo Tunisie, and Orange Tunisie—submitted their applications for a 5G license. This step follows the tender launched in July and signals a move towards the anticipated marketing of ultra-broadband services by the year’s end.
Data from the National Telecommunications Authority as of February 29, 2024, shows that Tunisia has 16.258 million mobile subscribers, representing a penetration rate of 136.5%, and 11.583 million mobile internet users, accounting for a 97.2% rate.
To ensure the effective implementation and optimization of 5G networks, a specialized technical committee was established on May 24, 2023. This committee is tasked with evaluating study results and guiding the country’s strategy on the deployment and management of fifth-generation networks. This initiative reflects Tunisia’s proactive approach to embracing advanced technology for national development.
