On Tuesday, September 24, 2024, Nepal Telecom (NTC) made a significant stride by establishing a 4G network in the Korala Border area, a crucial link between Nepal and Tibet, China. This development aims to provide robust telecommunication services to the residents, tourists, and businesses in this remote region.
NTC set up a cell tower to facilitate both 2G and 4G services, ensuring reliable voice calls through 2G and high-speed mobile broadband via 4G. The introduction of 4G is part of NTC’s broader effort to expand its network coverage in Nepal’s remote areas, including regions north of the border.
Santosh Baral, the NT office chief in Baglung, highlighted that alongside 4G, the tower would continue to support 2G to maintain dependable voice services. Additionally, NTC’s offerings include HD voice with VoLTE and eSIM technology, enhancing the quality and range of mobile services available to users.
The launch has been particularly well-received among the local community, traders, and government personnel, according to Tasinarbu Gurung, Chairman of Lomanthang Rural Municipality. The upgraded network will benefit a variety of users, including security and customs personnel who frequent the Korala border crossing.
Despite its sparse population, the Korala border is pivotal for trade and tourism. With recent infrastructure developments like a national transmission line and new government buildings funded by the Gandaki provincial government, the area is set for significant growth.
Chief District Officer Janakraj Pant noted the strategic importance of enhanced telecommunication, which supports the operations of immigration, customs, and security offices established in the region last July.
As NTC aims for comprehensive 4G coverage across Nepal and prepares for 5G trials in major cities, the new network at Korala Border marks a crucial step in improving the nation’s connectivity infrastructure, promising a profound impact on local lives and economic activities.
