Cloudflare Report: Majority of Middle East and Türkiye Business Leaders Expect Cybersecurity Incidents, But Many Remain Unprepared

A recent report from Cloudflare reveals that 78% of business leaders in the Middle East and Türkiye anticipate experiencing a cybersecurity incident in the next 12 months, yet only 46% feel adequately prepared. The research, which surveyed nearly 1,000 business and technology leaders in the region, highlighted vulnerabilities across various sectors, particularly in Financial Services and IT & Technology, where 63% and 61% of organizations, respectively, have already faced significant incidents.

The report also uncovered that nearly four out of ten organizations (38%) had to delay growth plans, while 37% resorted to staff layoffs due to the financial impact of cybersecurity breaches. Additionally, some businesses were forced to pay fines or engage in legal action as a result of incidents.

Healthcare Highly Targeted Despite Lower Incident Rates

Surprisingly, only 49% of healthcare organizations reported cybersecurity incidents, although this sector remains a prime target due to underinvestment and the high value of sensitive patient data. Meanwhile, Education and Retail, two sectors handling vast amounts of data, showed the lowest frequency of incidents.

Mid-sized companies appear to be the most vulnerable, with 58% reporting a breach in the last year, compared to 39% for smaller organizations. Industries like Business and Professional Services, Energy, Utilities, and Government are best prepared for attacks, while sectors like Media, Telecoms, and Real Estate are the least prepared, given their lower exposure to incidents.

Financial Losses Escalate Rapidly

Among the 53% of respondents who experienced a cybersecurity incident in the past year, 77% estimated financial losses of at least $1 million, and 38% reported losses of $2 million or more. The volume and frequency of cyberattacks are on the rise, with 82% of organizations experiencing at least one incident in the past 24 months, and 42% reporting a significant increase in attacks.

Top Cybersecurity Threats and Attack Vectors

Web attacks (69%), malware (62%), and phishing (55%) were identified as the most common types of cyberattacks faced by organizations in the region. Other significant threats include ransomware, spyware, business email compromise, and API attacks.

Cybersecurity Budgets and Solution Adoption

Nearly three-quarters (74%) of respondents expect their IT budgets for cybersecurity to increase in the coming year, with network protection remaining the top priority. Encryption is the most widely deployed solution, while technologies like Zero Trust Network Access are lagging, with 57% still in the early stages of adoption.

A Shift Towards Strategic Integration

Bashar Bashaireh, RVP Middle East and Türkiye at Cloudflare, emphasized the importance of innovative, integrated cybersecurity solutions. He explained, “The era of siloed legacy infrastructures is ending, making way for ‘any-to-any’ cloud platforms that offer businesses the flexibility to turn technological challenges into competitive advantages. This strategic shift will drive connectivity and innovation at the core of business success.”

As organizations continue to grapple with an increasingly complex cybersecurity landscape, the adoption of integrated, agile frameworks will be critical in securing their digital futures.
