Pakistan Mobile Communications Limited (Jazz) has announced the development of the country’s first locally developed Large Language Model (LLM) in partnership with the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) and the National Information Technology Board (NITB). This collaboration, highlighted in a press release on Wednesday, aims to foster indigenous Artificial Intelligence (AI) solutions tailored for government agencies, businesses, and citizens, while creating AI tools that reflect Pakistan’s unique context.
The LLM initiative is designed to embrace Pakistan’s rich cultural and linguistic diversity, enhancing efficiency across various sectors by equipping national entities with advanced AI applications. Minister of IT & Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja commented, “This partnership marks a significant milestone for Pakistan’s digital future, combining the strengths of academia, industry, and government to create a platform that represents our unique perspective while promoting our technological and cultural sovereignty.”
Aamir Ibrahim, CEO of Jazz, emphasized the transformative potential of AI for Pakistan, stating, “Through this collaboration with NUST and NITB, we aim to bridge the digital divide and empower communities with tools in their own languages. This national effort will accelerate digital inclusion.”
Javed Mehmood Bukhari, Rector of NUST, spoke about the university’s capacity to enhance AI capabilities in Pakistan, noting that the project will serve as a foundation for a progressive digital identity framework. Senior leaders from Jazz, NUST, and NITB will oversee this initiative under a five-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
