Dubai, UAE – Research from Proofpoint, a cybersecurity and compliance company, reveals that leading retailers in the Middle East are enhancing their email security measures to protect consumers from cyber threats. This comes as the region experiences significant growth in e-commerce, making online shoppers more vulnerable to email fraud and phishing attacks.
The research focused on the adoption of DMARC (Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting and Conformance), an email authentication protocol that helps prevent fraudulent emails from reaching users. The analysis shows that 90% of top Middle East retailers have implemented DMARC, with 40% using the strictest “reject” policy to block suspicious emails.
“Middle East retailers realise the risks millions of consumers face daily when they shop online,” said Emile Abou Saleh, Regional Director, Middle East & Africa at Proofpoint.
This represents an improvement from the previous year, where only 30% of retailers had implemented the “reject” policy. This increased adoption of DMARC reflects a growing awareness of the importance of email security in protecting both businesses and consumers.
As the Middle East’s retail market continues to grow, driven by a surge in online shopping, cybercriminals are employing new tactics to exploit vulnerabilities. Phishing attacks, ransomware, and business email compromise remain significant threats across various industries.
“Amid a surge in e-commerce in the region, deploying authentication protocols, such as DMARC, will be critical to support the growth and security posture of the retail sector,” added Abou Saleh.
Proofpoint emphasizes the importance of remaining vigilant against email fraud, especially during the holiday and shopping season. Consumers are advised to be cautious of phishing emails that may lead to unsafe websites designed to steal personal information.
The company recommends that consumers go directly to official websites by typing the address into their browser and avoid clicking on links in emails. They also suggest using password managers and multi-factor authentication to enhance online security.
By strengthening their email security measures and promoting awareness among consumers, Middle East retailers are taking proactive steps to combat cybercrime and create a safer online shopping environment.
