Meutya Hafid, Indonesia’s Minister of Communication and Digital, has opened up the possibility of collaboration with the Sultanate of Oman in the development of digital infrastructure in Indonesia. This offer was made during a discussion at the Reception for Oman’s 54th National Day in Jakarta on November 19, 2024.
Minister Meutya highlighted the great potential for both countries to work more closely in areas such as advancing digital infrastructure, enhancing cybersecurity, and promoting innovation. She expressed optimism that this collaboration would result in innovative solutions that would not only stimulate economic growth but also improve governance and the quality of life for communities.
Earlier, on November 18, 2024, Meutya held a bilateral meeting with Marisa Lago, the Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade at the U.S. Department of Commerce, and U.S. Ambassador to Indonesia Kamala Shirin Lakhdir. This meeting focused on strengthening digital technology cooperation, particularly in the fields of artificial intelligence (AI), inclusive digital transformation, and smart city development.
So far, 12 American companies have visited several Indonesian cities, including Jakarta, Denpasar, and the future capital city of Nusantara (IKN). Minister Meutya expressed hope that additional U.S. corporations would invest in smart city projects, particularly in IKN.
Furthermore, Meutya also welcomed Australian Ambassador Penny Williams on October 30, 2024, for discussions on Indonesia and Australia’s shared challenges in implementing digital government initiatives. The meeting fostered dialogue aimed at creating a safe cyberspace and supporting mutual economic growth. Additionally, 19 Australian companies have shown interest in investing in Indonesia’s technology and digital sectors, part of the Indonesia-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Action Plan for 2025-2029.
This series of meetings underscores Indonesia’s ongoing efforts to attract international investment in its digital infrastructure and to strengthen its position as a hub for innovation and smart technology development in Southeast Asia.
