The Iraqi government has selected Vodafone, a leading global telecom provider, to operate its forthcoming 5G network. This decision follows the Iraqi cabinet’s approval, as stated in a recent announcement from the Prime Minister’s Office.
Vodafone is currently negotiating a consulting contract for the 5G network’s design, according to their latest statement. The company, known for its extensive international presence, has been a significant player in various global markets. Its entry into the Iraqi market was facilitated through a strategic partnership with Asiacell, a major local telecom operator, back in 2009.
This collaboration with Asiacell marked the beginning of Vodafone’s expansion in the Middle East, enhancing its portfolio with a range of services in Iraq. The upcoming 5G network promises to revolutionize connectivity in the region with peak speeds of up to 10 gigabits per second and significantly reduced latency, facilitating smoother communication.
The project, endorsed by the Iraqi Minister of Communications Hiyam Al-Yasiri in October 2023, is part of a larger initiative to upgrade the nation’s telecommunications infrastructure. This development will not only boost Iraq’s digital framework but also open the door for local financial involvement in this high-tech venture.
Iraq’s proactive steps toward deploying a 5G network aim to align the country with 54 other nations that have already embraced this advanced technology, signifying a major leap forward in its telecommunications capabilities.
