ISLAMABAD: Minister of State for IT and Telecom, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, pledged on Sunday to overhaul the country’s internet infrastructure, aiming to restore optimal internet speeds and reinforce the telecom sector’s foundation.
In an interview with a private news channel, Khawaja emphasized the government’s ongoing efforts to ensure seamless continuity in the industry. She noted that the recent increase in cyber-attacks had heightened the need for swift action to strengthen Pakistan’s digital defenses.
Khawaja reassured the public of the government’s commitment to protecting the IT and telecom industry, highlighting it as a top priority. The government’s initiatives include upgrading existing systems, improving tower intensity, expanding broadband internet access, and addressing cybersecurity concerns. These measures aim to improve coverage, boost economic growth, and create a more secure online environment for citizens.
Responding to a question, Khawaja stated that the Ministry of Interior would instruct the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to investigate issues faced by citizens when sending videos, ensuring that internet speeds remain stable.
The minister acknowledged the current challenges but assured the public that the government is working diligently to resolve them. She also reiterated the importance of protecting citizens’ right to free expression, adding that temporary unavailability of digital platforms does not infringe on their freedom of speech.
