Regional ITU Workshop in Algiers Focuses on Inclusive Connectivity in the Arab Region

ALGIERS – A regional workshop hosted by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) under the auspices of Algeria’s Ministry of Post and Telecommunications commenced on Monday in Algiers. The event is themed “Towards Inclusive and Targeted Connectivity in the Arab Region.”

The opening ceremony was attended by several high-profile figures, including Karim Bibi Triki, Algeria’s Minister of Post and Telecommunications; Meriem Benmouloud, the High Commissioner for Digitization; Yacine El-Mahdi Oualid, Minister of Knowledge Economy, Start-ups and Micro-enterprises; and Adel Darwish, Director of the ITU Regional Office for Arab States. Delegates from various Arab nations also participated.

Adel Bentoumi, CEO of Algérie Télécom, emphasized in his inaugural speech that the workshop reflects the “trust” the ITU places in Algeria’s contributions to telecommunications and its “fruitful cooperation” with the organization.

Adel Darwish lauded Algeria’s “remarkable achievements” in telecommunications infrastructure and highlighted the event’s alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. He further explained that the workshop seeks to foster “targeted and inclusive communication” across the Arab region, facilitate the “exchange of expertise and knowledge,” and define “investment priorities” for sustainable and affordable connectivity through innovative solutions.

The opening session featured a video presentation showcasing Algeria’s significant advancements in telecommunications and ICT, implemented under the guidance of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

This two-day workshop brings together policymakers, telecommunications experts, and representatives from numerous Arab nations. Participants will explore strategies to enhance regional connectivity and develop targeted approaches to ensure equitable access to ICT for all.
