The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has granted permission for all internet service providers (ISPs) to set up and use cache servers. These local servers, maintained by ISPs, allow users to access content from nearby sources instead of relying on international bandwidth, improving efficiency and reducing costs.
This decision marks the repeal of a 2021 directive that previously restricted all ISPs, other than nationwide ones, from operating cache servers. As a result of the prior regulation, local ISPs had been forced to shut down their cache servers, while only international internet gateways, national internet exchanges, mobile operators, and nationwide ISPs were allowed to maintain them. With the new regulatory shift, local ISPs can now reinstate their cache servers, allowing for better bandwidth management and improved internet services for users.
