KATHMANDU: Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung, has urged the immediate mobilization of the Rural Telecommunication Development Fund (RTDF) to enhance connectivity in rural Nepal. The minister highlighted the importance of coordinating with service providers and prioritizing the expansion of 4G and 5G services. Additionally, he called for the swift implementation of the Integrated Office Management System (IOMS) to improve governance and curb corruption.
Minister Gurung’s visit to the Nepal Telecommunications Technical Development Authority (NEA) in Jamal was aimed at monitoring progress and discussing critical developments to advance Nepal’s digital infrastructure. The government’s ongoing digital agenda includes launching 5G in Kathmandu and establishing a security printing system to further technological growth.
During the visit, Communications Secretary Radhika Aryal emphasized the need for NEA to improve its regulatory role and complete pending projects. She also highlighted concerns about the slow progress on new projects and the need for amendments to the Telecommunications Act of 1997. Meanwhile, NEA Chair Bhupendra Bhandari outlined challenges such as the office’s reliance on rented premises and urged the construction of a dedicated building, for which Minister Gurung assured full support.
This strategic push for greater collaboration and infrastructural development is seen as vital for Nepal’s digital future.
