ISLAMABAD: According to the latest report from the World Population Review (WPR), Pakistan ranks 198th globally in internet speed, falling behind countries such as Palestine, Bhutan, Ghana, Iraq, Iran, Lebanon, and Libya.
The report reveals that Pakistan’s average mobile internet download speed is 19.59 Mbps, while broadband internet averages 15.52 Mbps. In comparison, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) leads the world in both mobile and broadband internet speed, followed by Singapore in mobile internet and Qatar in broadband. Hong Kong and Chile rank third and fourth for mobile internet speed, respectively.
The WPR report also anticipates improvements in internet speed with advancements in technology. However, Pakistan’s internet speed issues persist, with intermittent outages and reduced speeds affecting users’ ability to browse, download, and share media efficiently.
Sajjad Mustafa Syed, Chairman of the Pakistan Software Houses Association (P@SHA), has assured that the current internet speed problems will likely be resolved within the next three months. He noted concerns about the potential impact of firewall implementation, which may further hinder connectivity.
Reports from across Pakistan indicate significant slowdowns in both Wi-Fi and mobile data services, making it difficult for users to send or receive media files such as images, videos, and voice notes on platforms like WhatsApp. According to Syed, if images fail to transmit over WhatsApp, it could indicate that monitoring is taking place.
