Bangladesh is witnessing a steady increase in household internet access, with the latest report from the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) revealing that 50.4% of households had internet connections in the July-September 2024 period. This marks an increase from 43.6% in 2023 and 38.1% in 2022. The survey, which surveyed 61,632 households across 24 regions, shows a notable regional disparity: 46% of rural households and 60.3% of urban households are now internet users.
The BBS’s ICT Access and Use Survey for the first quarter of FY24 also revealed a slight decline in household electricity consumption, with 98.2% of households using electricity, down from 99.1% in 2023. Furthermore, 9.2% of households own computers, an increase from 8.9% in 2023 and 8.7% in 2022.
The survey highlighted that mobile phone usage continues to be widespread, with 98% of households owning at least one mobile phone, a slight increase from 97.9% in 2023. Smartphone usage has risen significantly to 70.1%, up from 63.3% in 2023 and 52.1% in 2022. Additionally, television usage has risen to 63.5%, compared to 62.2% in 2023. The data underscores the growing trend towards digital connectivity and technology adoption in Bangladesh.
