Jordan, represented by Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) Chairman Bassam Al Sarhan, has been unanimously elected to lead the Euro-Mediterranean Group of Telecommunications Regulators (EMERG) as its president for the years 2025 and 2026. This decision was made during a virtual meeting on Thursday, chaired by Cyprus’ Deputy Commissioner for Communications, Petros Galides.
Al Sarhan’s election highlights Jordan’s growing influence in global communication and regulatory bodies. His leadership in enhancing regional and international collaboration, fostering consensus, and harmonizing telecom sectors has been recognized. Following the announcement, Al Sarhan emphasized the significance of this achievement for Jordan and its growing stature at both the regional and international levels.
He stressed that the TRC’s role in building capacities and regulatory frameworks is vital for creating a communication environment that attracts investment and benefits citizens. Sarhan also expressed Jordan’s readiness, with its skilled human and technical resources, to assume global leadership roles in the telecommunications industry.
Sarhan, who has served as TRC Chairman and CEO since 2021, has held leadership positions in international telecom companies and spearheaded numerous initiatives in telecommunications, information technology, and postal services. His tenure at EMERG will focus on promoting regulatory coordination and electronic communications standards in line with European Union best practices.
EMERG, founded in 2008, aims to promote cooperation among telecom regulators in the Mediterranean region. With 22 member states, including EU and Mediterranean countries, EMERG continues to advance the region’s regulatory frameworks in the pursuit of peace, stability, and prosperity through dialogue and collaboration.
