Telecom Egypt, in collaboration with Cisco, has successfully activated a Mediterranean subsea link on the 2Africa subsea cable system. This project connects Port Said, Egypt, to Marseille, France, via Genoa, Italy, and uses Cisco’s Network Convergence System (NCS) to create a high-capacity connection.
The new link enhances Telecom Egypt’s subsea infrastructure, enabling more efficient cable operations and increasing international traffic capacity. With the use of Acacia’s multi-haul coherent module, the NCS offers high performance with reduced power consumption, optimizing data transmission and spectral efficiency. This upgrade is particularly beneficial for bandwidth-intensive services such as cloud computing and artificial intelligence.
Mohamed Nasr, CEO of Telecom Egypt, emphasized that collaboration is key to innovation, and this project is part of their ongoing investment in network technologies to meet growing global demand for reliable connectivity. He also highlighted Telecom Egypt’s commitment to expanding its infrastructure and launching new, innovative products and services.
Gordon Thomson, Vice President at Cisco, added that the partnership showcases the importance of high-capacity, reliable networks in the era of AI and digital transformation. Cisco’s cutting-edge technology will help Telecom Egypt maximize the potential of the 2Africa cable, supporting the growing need for robust networks globally.
