Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced a significant investment of US$8.3 billion to expand cloud infrastructure in the AWS Asia-Pacific (Mumbai) Region, located in Maharashtra, India. This investment is part of AWS’s broader US$12.7 billion initiative to enhance cloud computing capacity in India by 2030.
The plan was formalized through a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between the Government of Maharashtra and AWS during the World Economic Forum in Davos. AWS anticipates that the investment could add US$15.3 billion to India’s GDP and support over 81,300 full-time jobs annually in the local data centre supply chain by 2030. These jobs will span multiple industries, including telecommunications, construction, electricity generation, facilities maintenance, and data centre operations.
This investment builds upon AWS’s previous US$3.7 billion expenditure on cloud infrastructure in Maharashtra between 2016 and 2022. AWS’s commitment to India includes its first cloud infrastructure region, the AWS Asia-Pacific (Mumbai) Region, launched in 2016, and its second region, the AWS Asia-Pacific (Hyderabad) Region, introduced in 2022. Both regions help customers securely store data within India.
AWS continues to empower public sector organizations in India, driving innovation in sectors such as healthcare insurance, e-procurement, and banking through its cloud-based solutions.
