Veon in Talks with SpaceX to Bring Starlink Satellite Services to Bangladesh

Veon Ltd, the Dubai-based telecommunications company that owns Banglalink, Bangladesh’s third-largest mobile operator, has confirmed it is in discussions to expand its partnership with SpaceX’s Starlink satellite service. The move aims to introduce satellite-powered internet connectivity to markets in Bangladesh, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan.

Veon’s CEO, Kaan Terzioglu, highlighted the importance of combining terrestrial and space-based networks to address the limitations of terrestrial networks, particularly during natural disasters like floods or energy shortages. He emphasized the need for reliable telecom access in underserved markets and indicated that Veon’s strategy also includes expanding into financial services and entertainment.

A Banglalink official confirmed that if the partnership with Starlink is finalized, the service would be available in Bangladesh. However, regulatory challenges, including spectrum allocation, may affect the commercial rollout of Starlink’s service in various markets.

Veon is also exploring opportunities in emerging markets such as Vietnam, Ethiopia, and Mexico, looking for under-performing assets in these countries to expand its reach.
