Huawei to Build $3.5 Million Data Center for Nepal Telecom

Huawei has signed a Letter of Intent with Nepal Telecom to build a state-of-the-art data center in Kathmandu, Nepal, with an additional disaster recovery center located 265km away in Bhairahawa. The project, valued at NPR 484 million ($3.5 million), will modernize Nepal Telecom’s data handling and become a key asset for delivering efficient services.

Huawei will be responsible for the physical infrastructure of the data center, which is expected to help Nepal Telecom streamline its operations and potentially generate income. The telco, which has seen declining revenues in recent years, is seeking to enhance its digital capabilities as part of its strategy for growth. Nepal Telecom was a state-owned monopoly until 2003 when the entry of privately owned United Telecom marked the start of competition in the market.

The facility will also play an important role in the country’s growing digital landscape, joining other data center operators like Cloud Himalaya and DataHub. Huawei has been involved in similar collaborations globally, supporting digital transformation initiatives and the rollout of 5G networks. Notably, Huawei has partnered with Algeria and Pakistan for similar data center projects.
