The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has revoked the licences of 41 Application-to-Person (A2P) SMS aggregators for failing to renew their certifications and continuing commercial operations after their licences expired. In a public notification issued on Wednesday, the BTRC warned that any activity under the revoked licences would be deemed illegal and punishable under the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Act 2001.
The BTRC also directed the affected companies to surrender their licences and settle any outstanding dues within 30 days. In a separate circular, the commission invited new applications for SMS aggregator licences to ensure proper regulatory oversight in this sector.
A2P SMS aggregators are intermediaries between businesses and mobile operators, facilitating bulk messaging for promotional campaigns, customer notifications, and authentication services. The BTRC has consistently strengthened its oversight to ensure compliance with legal and operational standards, previously revoking licences of internet service providers and cybercafés for similar violations.
This latest move underscores BTRC’s commitment to enforcing regulatory compliance, protecting consumer interests, and maintaining order in Bangladesh’s telecommunications industry.
