The National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) of Egypt announced it will begin enforcing a ban on the activation of mobile phones that do not meet internationally approved specifications and standards, particularly those set by the Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA), effective February 1st.
This decision is part of the NTRA’s broader efforts to protect users’ rights, ensure safety, and maintain high-quality telecom services in Egypt. Non-compliant mobile phones can degrade service quality and pose potential public health risks. To prevent this, the NTRA urges consumers to check the 15-digit IMEI number of any newly purchased phone via the “Telephony” app to verify its compliance with global standards.
The NTRA further advises users to request a tax invoice when purchasing a new phone and to report violations through its official channels. Traders and distributors are also warned against selling non-compliant phones, with legal action to be taken in coordination with the Consumer Protection Agency (CPA).
Telecommunication Regulation Law No. 10 of 2003 prohibits the import, manufacture, and sale of non-compliant devices without prior approval from NTRA, ensuring devices meet safety and technical standards. The NTRA has set up multiple channels, including call centers and the My NTRA mobile app, for citizens to report any violations related to non-compliant telecommunications equipment.
This measure is designed to safeguard users, enhance service quality, and ensure the integrity of Egypt’s telecommunications infrastructure.
