Pakistan Moves Forward with Telecom Equipment Standards Regulations to Strengthen Industry Quality

The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication (MoITT) has submitted the Telecom Equipment Standards Regulations to the Cabinet Committee for Legislative Cases (CCLC) for review. This follows a previous review by the Ministry of Law and a directive from the Cabinet Division. The regulations aim to ensure telecom equipment quality and compliance in Pakistan, and the MoITT has fulfilled the requirement for federal cabinet approval.

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) highlighted the establishment of the Standards and Conformance Assurance Directorate in its annual report. This dedicated body will define testing methods in line with regulatory technical standards and verify telecom devices’ compliance before they enter the market. This initiative is essential for ensuring the quality and reliability of telecom equipment in the country.

The proposed regulations cover key industry stakeholders, including licensees, manufacturers, and importers, addressing areas like electromagnetic compatibility, health and safety, and radio frequency communication. By enforcing these standards, the PTA aims to prevent the distribution of substandard or incompatible telecom products that could compromise network performance and security.

The regulations also seek to enhance consumer protection, boost business confidence, and maintain the integrity of Pakistan’s telecommunications infrastructure by minimizing disruptions and technical issues caused by faulty equipment. Ultimately, these steps will improve the overall security, efficiency, and quality of telecom services in Pakistan.
