Moov Africa Gabon Avoids Nationalization Amid Economic Shifts

Moov Africa Gabon, the local subsidiary of Morocco’s Maroc Telecom, has successfully avoided the nationalization efforts targeting several strategic firms in the country. Gabon’s minister of digital economy clarified during the Mobile World Congress (MWC) that the telecommunications sector was not affected by nationalization policies, ensuring the company’s continued operation.

Following a coup led by Brice Oligui Nguima, Gabon has implemented nationalization measures, particularly in the energy sector, including the nationalization of Assala Energy and Vivo Energy’s shares in the Société Gabonaise d’Entreposage des Produits Pétroliers (SGEPP), aiming to enhance the country’s control over its hydrocarbons industry. Despite an economic commission’s recommendation to nationalize telecom companies, Moov Africa Gabon remains unaffected, with Maroc Telecom maintaining a dominant 52% market share, while rival Ariel Gabon holds 48%.

This development highlights the growing efforts by Gabon to strengthen its sovereignty over key industries, with telecommunications companies like Moov Africa continuing to operate without disruption.
