The UAE Cybersecurity Council has uncovered over 1,200 cases of internet begging in 2024, particularly during Ramadan. The council issued a warning about fraudulent donation campaigns exploiting social media, where scammers use fake accounts, emotional videos, and deepfake technology to manipulate public sentiment and solicit funds.
Dr. Mohamed Al Kuwaiti, Head of Cybersecurity of the UAE Government, highlighted the rising threat of digital begging, stressing that cybersecurity efforts are essential in combating these scams. Authorities use advanced technologies to detect fake accounts, track suspicious patterns, and monitor illicit financial transactions. Collaboration with security agencies and financial institutions is key in shutting down fraudulent accounts and prosecuting offenders.
Dr. Al Kuwaiti urged the public to verify donation requests and report any suspicious online begging activities. The UAE Cybersecurity Council advised against donating through unverified social media accounts and stressed the importance of contributing only to licensed organizations.
The council also warned of phishing attacks aimed at stealing personal and financial data, advising vigilance against misleading messages, unverified links, and urgent appeals for donations.
