Egypt’s four major telecom operators are poised to roll out 5G services in the first half of 2025, marking a significant milestone in the country’s digital transformation. Telecom Egypt has secured the first 5G license for USD 150 million, followed by Vodafone Egypt, Orange, and Etisalat, which obtained their licenses in October 2024.
This 5G rollout is more than just about increasing internet speeds; it’s about enabling advanced applications like artificial intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), and smart city solutions. These technologies are expected to drive Egypt’s digital transformation and reshape connectivity, fueling innovation across the country.
What’s Happening? Minister of Communication and Information Technology, Dr. Amr Talaat, has confirmed that 5G services will be launched by all four telecom operators in Egypt in the first half of 2025. He emphasized that 5G technology will bring faster internet speeds and lower latency, enhancing user experiences and enabling applications in IoT, AI, and smart cities.
Dr. Talaat highlighted the government’s collaboration with telecom companies to ensure the necessary infrastructure is in place to support this technology. He also pointed out that 5G will contribute to Egypt’s competitiveness in the ICT sector, positioning the country as a regional leader in digital services.
Why Does This Matter? The introduction of 5G goes beyond just faster browsing speeds; it is a catalyst for economic growth. The technology will enhance the quality of telecommunications services and support digital transformation across various industries, contributing to Egypt’s sustainable development goals. It’s also a critical part of the ICT ministry’s strategy to develop the telecom sector and attract investment in technology.
How Did We Get Here? Telecom Egypt was the first operator to secure a 5G license, acquiring it for USD 150 million and granting the company the right to operate 5G services for 15 years. In October 2024, Vodafone Egypt, Orange, and Etisalat followed suit by obtaining their own licenses.
The process of preparing for the 5G rollout has been extensive. In November 2024, Telecom Egypt and Vodafone Egypt signed a USD 609 million infrastructure agreement to support the launch and rollout of 5G services. This agreement allows Vodafone to utilize Telecom Egypt’s infrastructure and fiber-optic network, ensuring the successful deployment of the technology.
Minister Talaat emphasized that the partnership between the two companies is pivotal to the 5G rollout. Furthermore, he noted that over EGP 150 billion has been invested since 2018 to enhance Egypt’s digital infrastructure, including expanding fiber-optic networks and licensing 5G services.
Preparations for the Rollout In March 2024, Telecom Egypt entered a partnership with Huawei, with the latter providing advanced network solutions, including 5G wireless technology, a service-oriented core, and a 5G-ready transport network. This agreement is crucial for ensuring smooth adaptation to 5G and maximizing its potential.
As Egypt prepares to enter the 5G era, the country is laying the groundwork for a future of enhanced connectivity, technological innovation, and economic growth.
