Visa Study Reveals Growing Consumer Awareness and Caution in Digital Payments in Kuwait

KUWAIT CITY – A recent study by Visa has highlighted an increase in consumer awareness and heightened precautionary measures in Kuwait when it comes to making digital payments. The ninth annual ‘Stay Secure’ study, which surveyed 5,800 adults across 17 markets in the Central Europe, Middle East, and Africa (CEMEA) region, revealed that 94 percent of consumers in Kuwait are taking additional steps to secure their digital transactions.

The study also noted that 44 percent of respondents in Kuwait had limited experience in detecting fraud. However, the growing adoption of precautionary measures and a preference for more secure authentication methods show a positive shift in consumer behavior since the previous 2023 study. Consumers are now better equipped to recognize warning signs and verify online transaction legitimacy, signaling an increase in digital awareness.

Visa’s study also highlighted significant growth in the adoption of digital payments in Kuwait. Around 80 percent of respondents expressed full or partial confidence in digital payment methods, while 79 percent expected to increase their use of digital payments over the next year.

Neil Fernandez, Head of Risk for the Middle East and North Africa at Visa, said, “The digital payments arena is rapidly evolving, and consumers in Kuwait are demonstrating a strong willingness to adopt digital payment methods while becoming more aware of the importance of taking precautionary measures. Educating consumers about fraudulent methods is the most important line of defense.”

Shashank Singh, Vice President and General Manager for Kuwait and Qatar at Visa, noted, “The ‘Stay Secure’ study provides valuable insights that help inform strategies to build customer trust, ensure security, and support the Kuwaiti government’s digital economy efforts.”

Despite the positive trends, the study revealed that nearly 44 percent of consumers in Kuwait had fallen victim to fraud, underscoring the need for continued efforts to secure digital payments.
