AI Integration in Egypt’s Education System: A New Era of Learning

Egypt’s education system is undergoing a transformation, with artificial intelligence (AI) playing a pivotal role in reshaping how students learn. In 2024, the Minister of Education announced the government’s commitment to integrating AI and programming into the curriculum to better prepare students for a tech-driven future.

A New Focus on AI in Schools

In October 2024, Minister of Education Mohamed Abdel-Latif revealed that AI and programming would become core subjects for first-year secondary students in Egypt. This initiative, called Gateway to Advanced Technologies and Education (GATE), is designed to equip students with essential digital skills for the modern workforce.

With over 25 million students enrolled in Egyptian schools, this shift from traditional teaching methods to technology-driven education marks a major step toward modernizing the system. Integrating AI into the curriculum is part of a broader effort to better prepare students for the future job market.

Teachers’ Perspectives on AI in Education

While AI offers numerous benefits, its integration into classrooms raises questions about its responsible use. Teachers are finding a balance between leveraging AI’s potential to enhance learning while ensuring that it does not replace the human compassion and empathy that educators provide.

Monica Gordon, an English teacher at the Modern American Schools of Egypt, admitted her initial hesitation towards AI. While she acknowledged AI’s potential to assist in tasks like summarizing text, she stressed that it should never replace the personal touch teachers bring to the classroom.

Salma Mohamed, an AP English teacher at New Generation International School, expressed more optimism. She explained how AI tools can help create personalized learning experiences and support students who struggle with subjects like math and science. Mohamed also highlighted AI’s role in fostering collaboration among students, helping them work together more effectively on group projects.

Aya Hazem, a French teacher at Collège Sacré-Cœur Ghamra, agreed with Mohamed, emphasizing AI’s ability to make assignments more interactive and spark student curiosity. Hazem believes AI has the power to transform education by making teaching more efficient and creating engaging learning experiences.

The Role of AI in Enhancing Education

A 2025 research article suggests that AI’s integration into education could offer many advantages. AI can provide students with personalized learning plans, access to diverse resources, and the ability to learn at their own pace. However, concerns about misuse, such as plagiarism, remain a challenge.

Despite these concerns, AI presents an opportunity for teachers to enhance learning experiences and provide personalized tools for students. As AI continues to shape the future of education, it will be important to strike a balance between technological innovation and the human elements that are integral to teaching and learning.
