Batelco, in collaboration with tech giant Nokia, has launched Bahrain’s first private 5G network at Alba, the world’s largest single-site aluminium smelter. This network is designed specifically for industrial applications and aims to significantly enhance Alba’s operational performance.
The private 5G network, with ultra-low latency connectivity, will support AI-powered predictive maintenance, autonomous systems, and real-time monitoring to improve Alba’s operational efficiency. Batelco highlights several key benefits of the network, including real-time decision-making, precise control over industrial processes, and robust security features to protect sensitive data within the high-risk environment of an aluminium smelter.
Additionally, IoT-enabled safety devices integrated into the network will allow real-time tracking of hazardous conditions, improving worker safety. The network will also support Industrial IoT and smart machinery integration, optimizing workflows, reducing downtime, and maximizing productivity.
Mahmoud El Banna, Head of Enterprise Campus Edge Sales for Nokia in the Middle East and Africa, noted that this deployment will enable Alba to fully embrace Industry 4.0 applications, unlocking the potential of digitalisation and automation. Alba’s CEO, Ali Al Baqali, emphasized that this cutting-edge technology would revolutionize operations, enhance safety protocols, and promote sustainable growth through advanced data analytics, solidifying Alba’s position as a global leader in the aluminium industry.
