Batelco, in partnership with Nokia, has launched Bahrain’s first private 5G network at Alba, the world’s largest single-site aluminium smelter, to support the company’s digital transformation. This advanced network is set to enhance operational efficiency, innovation, and safety in Bahrain’s manufacturing sector.
The agreement formalizing this strategic collaboration was signed yesterday at Alba’s headquarters in Askar, with Batelco’s CEO Maitham Abdulla and Alba’s CEO Ali Al Baqali present, alongside key executives from both organizations.
The bespoke private 5G network, designed by Batelco in collaboration with Nokia, will significantly improve Alba’s operational performance. It will support the deployment of artificial intelligence (AI)-driven predictive maintenance, autonomous systems, and real-time monitoring capabilities. These innovations will streamline Alba’s complex industrial processes and elevate their operational excellence.
Batelco’s private 5G network offers ultra-low latency connectivity, enabling real-time decision-making and precise control over industrial operations. Additionally, robust security features will safeguard sensitive data in this high-risk industrial environment. The integration of Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled safety devices will ensure real-time tracking of hazardous conditions, significantly improving worker safety. The network will also facilitate the integration of Industrial IoT and smart machinery, optimizing workflows, reducing downtime, and maximizing productivity.
Batelco CEO Maitham Abdulla commented, “This deployment at Alba marks a transformative shift for Bahrain’s industrial sector. Our partnership with Nokia enables us to bring private 5G capabilities to Alba, enhancing efficiency, safety, and innovation. This goes beyond connectivity—it provides a strategic foundation for Alba’s continued growth and digital transformation.”
Mahmoud El Banna, Head of Enterprise Campus Edge Sales, Middle East and Africa at Nokia, added, “We’re thrilled to collaborate with Batelco on Bahrain’s first industrial private 5G network with Alba as our launch partner. This will enable Alba to embrace Industry 4.0 applications, unlocking the full benefits of digitalisation and automation.”
Alba CEO Ali Al Baqali outlined his vision for the project: “This private 5G network is a major milestone in our digital transformation. By leveraging this cutting-edge connectivity, we aim to revolutionize our operations, enhance safety, and drive sustainable growth. This technology will empower us to optimize processes, improve decision-making with real-time data, and solidify our leadership in the global aluminium industry. We are excited to partner with Batelco and Nokia to set new standards for innovation and efficiency in Bahrain’s manufacturing sector.”
