Vodafone Egypt recently convened a high-level CxO and policy roundtable in Cairo, where the GSMA unveiled its latest report, Igniting Mobile Investment in MENA. The report delves into the region’s readiness to improve and expand mobile networks, highlighting both opportunities and challenges in mobile investment. It sheds light on critical issues within existing policies, offering practical recommendations to unlock further investment and enhance mobile accessibility across the MENA region.
According to the report, outdated regulatory frameworks, fragmented licensing management, and excessive sector-specific taxation are major barriers to the essential investments needed to modernize and expand mobile networks. Furthermore, the study reveals that over 250 million people in MENA remain offline, despite being within network coverage. This underscores the urgent need for policies that not only drive infrastructure expansion but also ensure digital inclusion for all.
Presented during the GSMA MENA CxO Roundtable, the event brought together senior government officials and industry leaders to discuss the region’s growing momentum toward more collaborative policymaking. The discussions emphasized the importance of bridging the gap between ambition and action, stressing that successful digital transformation requires close public-private sector collaboration.
Jawad Abbassi, Head of MENA at GSMA, noted, “Governments in MENA have set bold digital transformation targets, but the investment environment still lags. This report offers a clear roadmap for reform, helping mobile technology deliver the connectivity, services, and economic growth that societies across the region are counting on.”
Michaela Angonius, Head of Policy and Regulation at GSMA, commented, “The steps outlined in this report are not just about building networks; they are about creating opportunities for people, communities, and economies across MENA. The right policies will unlock innovation, create jobs, reduce inequality, and empower millions in the digital age.”
Ayman Essam, External Affairs and Legal Director at Vodafone Egypt, added, “The telecommunications sector is key to driving economic growth and digital transformation. At Vodafone Egypt, we’re committed to leveraging our 5G expertise across 49 Vodafone markets to address the region’s challenges. By collaborating with MENA operators and the GSMA, we aim to drive policy reforms and foster a regulatory environment that supports sustainable growth.”
