The High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to Bangladesh, Dharmapala Weerakkody, along with Counsellor – Commerce Srimali Jayarathne, met with Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS) Associate Committee Chairman Rafel Kabir and other committee members on 27 April at the BASIS office in Dhaka to discuss enhancing ICT sector collaboration between the two countries.
During the meeting, High Commissioner Weerakkody presented an overview of Sri Lanka’s IT industry, its current status, and the government’s vision for expanding it as a key export-oriented service sector. He highlighted promising investment opportunities in Sri Lanka’s IT landscape, as well as the incentives available to foreign investors. Additionally, the High Commissioner proposed several collaboration avenues between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, including software development, business process outsourcing (BPO), knowledge sharing, capacity building, and potential joint ventures. He also extended an invitation for BASIS to participate in “Disrupt Asia 2025,” Sri Lanka’s premier ICT event, scheduled for September 2025 in Colombo, inviting relevant stakeholders from the Bangladesh IT industry.
In response, BASIS Chairman and committee members expressed strong interest in connecting with their Sri Lankan counterparts to explore collaboration opportunities. They also expressed their readiness to engage with Sri Lankan IT companies visiting Bangladesh to further explore potential joint ventures.
