HUTCH, one of Sri Lanka’s leading mobile service providers, has further expanded its corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts with a new initiative aimed at empowering students through sustainable mobility solutions. In collaboration with the Ministry of Education, HUTCH provided 100 electric bicycles to schools, with a focus on helping students in rural areas overcome transportation challenges.
The ceremony, held on April 25 at the Ministry of Education’s premises, saw the presence of Dr. Madhura Senevirathne, Deputy Minister of Education, along with Shakila Wijesinghe, Acting Chief Financial Officer, and other dignitaries from both the Ministry and HUTCH. The bicycles were distributed to schoolchildren in the Anuradhapura district, aligning with the Ministry’s vision of improving access to education through sustainable means.
Dr. Senevirathne emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “This timely and thoughtful initiative by HUTCH directly supports our efforts to bridge educational disparities across regions. By ensuring that students in remote areas have reliable means to attend school, we are investing not just in individual futures, but in the future strength of our nation. We deeply appreciate HUTCH’s support in promoting sustainable transport solutions within our education system.”
HUTCH’s Chief Executive Officer, Saumitra Gupta, expressed the company’s ongoing commitment to education and sustainability. “At HUTCH, we are dedicated to creating meaningful change by supporting national initiatives that advance education and sustainability. This project is a reflection of our broader mission to bridge gaps in educational access for rural communities while promoting greener, more sustainable modes of transport. We are proud to stand alongside the Ministry of Education in driving forward a future where every child has the opportunity to pursue their education without barriers.”
The electric bicycles initiative is part of HUTCH’s broader CSR agenda, which emphasizes sustainability, education, and community empowerment. This initiative underscores the company’s commitment to fostering inclusive development across Sri Lanka, ensuring that students, regardless of their geographic location, have the opportunity to access education and contribute to a brighter, more sustainable future.
