Iraq has signed a landmark strategic transit agreement with DIL Technology, a Kurdish-licensed firm, aimed at facilitating seamless data transmission across the country. This agreement, finalized on Thursday by the Ministry of Communications, represents the first unified telecom initiative by Iraq to present a cohesive framework to international companies.
Under the agreement, the data flow process has been streamlined, eliminating the need for companies to negotiate separately with federal and Kurdish entities. Hayam Al-Yasiri, the Minister of Communications, emphasized that the agreement positions Iraq as a secure and efficient alternative to increasingly unstable maritime routes, which have raised concerns among global telecom providers.
The newly integrated corridor will extend from the southern port of Al-Faw to the northern Ibrahim Khalil border crossing, forming a continuous fiber-optic network overseen centrally by the Ministry of Communications. This infrastructure initiative is expected to enhance Iraq’s attractiveness to international telecom partners while promoting long-term revenue generation and digital sovereignty.
DIL Technology, responsible for maintaining infrastructure at Iraq’s border crossings, will serve as the technical facilitator under the federal ministry’s supervision.
