Sri Lanka’s Dialog Axiata has officially launched the IAX (India Asia Xpress) submarine cable system, marking a significant step in its efforts to bolster the country’s international connectivity infrastructure. This move is part of Dialog’s commitment to investing over US$100 million to strengthen Sri Lanka’s digital infrastructure for the future.
The IAX cable, developed in collaboration with a consortium of regional telecom partners and global hyperscalers—including Reliance Jio of India, which is leading the project—connects key locations such as Mumbai and Chennai to Singapore. It also integrates with the India-Europe-Xpress (IEX) cable in Mumbai to extend connectivity to the Middle East, Africa, and Europe.
The system comprises 12 cable landing stations across five countries, including Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Malaysia, with a main trunk running from Tuas in Singapore to Mumbai. Dialog Axiata claims that the IAX cable will significantly boost Sri Lanka’s global connectivity by providing high-speed, high-capacity bandwidth. The new system seamlessly integrates into Dialog’s existing subsea infrastructure, ensuring efficient and scalable data transmission between major global content hubs.
Moreover, the IAX cable complements Dialog’s existing BBG (Bay of Bengal Gateway) and MSC (Maldives Sri Lanka Cable) systems, improving network reliability and reducing the risk of single points of failure. Dialog’s advanced cable landing stations in Matara, a coastal city in the south, and Mount Lavinia, near the capital Colombo, ensure uninterrupted, secure connectivity for both businesses and consumers.
To celebrate this strategic milestone, Dialog hosted an official launch event at the IAX Submarine Cable Landing Station in Matara, attended by the High Commissioner of Malaysia, the Consul General of India, and senior officials from Dialog and its parent company Axiata Group.
