AMMAN — The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) reported notable expansion in Jordan’s telecommunications services during the fourth quarter of 2024, with significant growth in data consumption and 5G adoption.
According to the TRC’s quarterly statistical report, fixed-line voice service subscriptions declined slightly, reaching 486,000 by the end of Q4 2024, down from 493,000 in the same period in 2023, marking a 1.4% decrease. Residential users made up 67% of the total, while commercial users accounted for the remaining 33%. Despite the drop in subscriptions, fixed-line call traffic increased by 6%, reaching 11.3 million call minutes, with 85% of the total being local traffic and 15% international.
Mobile broadband subscriptions saw a growth of 4.1%, rising to 8.046 million in Q4 2024 from 7.727 million the previous year. Prepaid plans made up 69% of mobile broadband subscriptions, while postpaid plans accounted for 31%. Mobile voice traffic totaled 7.37 billion minutes, with 97% being domestic calls and 3% international.
Text messaging volume surged dramatically, reaching 576 million messages in Q4 2024, a 122% increase compared to the 260 million messages sent during the same period in 2023. The mobile phone penetration rate stood at 69% of the total population and 106% among individuals aged 15 and above by the end of Q4 2024, showing a slight increase from 67% and 104%, respectively, in Q4 2023.
Mobile broadband data usage rose by 13%, reaching 658 million gigabytes in Q4 2024, compared to 580 million GB in the same quarter the previous year. Fixed broadband internet subscriptions grew modestly to 812,000 by the end of Q4 2024, reflecting a growth rate of 0.8% and a household penetration rate of 33.4%. Fiber-optic internet remained dominant, with 591,000 subscriptions, accounting for 72.8% of total fixed broadband subscriptions. Data consumption through fixed broadband reached 1.339 billion GB, up 15% from 1.161 billion GB in Q4 2023.
The average monthly fixed internet usage per subscription rose by 14%, reaching 550 GB, up from 481 GB in Q4 2023. Additionally, 5G mobile subscriptions saw exponential growth, reaching 112,900 in Q4 2024, marking a 60% increase from the previous quarter and an 800% rise compared to Q4 2023.
Leased line subscriptions also experienced significant growth, totaling 24,143 by the end of Q4 2024, a 17.5% increase from 20,539 in Q4 2023.
