Nabeel bin Yacoub Al Hamer, His Majesty the King’s Advisor for Media Affairs, participated in the first session of the second day of the Arab Media Forum in Kuwait. The session, moderated by former Kuwaiti Information Minister Sami Al Nisf, focused on the credibility and verification of information in the context of artificial intelligence (AI).
Al Hamer discussed the ongoing debates surrounding AI, noting that as a new development, it raises questions and requires responsible usage. He emphasized the importance of using AI to serve societal interests, drawing parallels to the initial skepticism surrounding the internet, which later proved its effectiveness in enhancing professional and practical life.
He stressed that AI should be seen as a supportive tool that enhances human cognitive abilities and productivity, not as a replacement for human roles. AI, according to Al Hamer, should be used with caution, without fear or exaggeration, to maximize its potential benefits.
Dr. Mohammed Al Enezi, Professor of Science at Kuwait’s College of Basic Education, raised concerns about the challenges AI presents, particularly in diminishing human skills. He warned that as AI technologies evolve, there is a risk of people losing manual intervention skills, while also acknowledging the advantages AI brings. He also cautioned about the embedded biases that could exist in certain AI programs.
Dr. Mohamed Binhuwaidin, Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences in the UAE, highlighted that while AI is increasingly affecting various professions, technology cannot be resisted. He called for a balanced approach in utilizing AI, stressing that Gulf countries are well-positioned to address the challenges, provided they prepare a generation equipped with critical thinking skills and foster a culture of data verification. He also urged the creation of legislative frameworks at local, regional, and international levels to regulate AI use.
Dr. Binhuwaidin further stressed the crucial role of educational institutions in supporting teachers and equipping them to teach skills that AI cannot replicate.
Faisal Al Ali, Enterprise Risk Management Department Manager at Zain Kuwait, emphasized the importance of social responsibility in AI adoption. He highlighted the need for companies and institutions to use AI technologies carefully, particularly in safeguarding customer data and preventing its misuse in AI applications. He also called for stronger regulatory and legislative measures to protect privacy and ensure the security of information.
The session at the Arab Media Forum underscored the importance of responsible AI usage, the need for proper regulation, and the significant role of education in preparing future generations for the challenges and opportunities posed by AI.
