The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has mandated up to a 20% reduction in broadband internet prices for consumers, effective July 1, 2025, aiming to make internet access more affordable nationwide. The move follows a detailed market analysis and approval by telecom and finance ministries.
New monthly tariffs lower the 5 Mbps package from Tk 500 to Tk 400, 10 Mbps from Tk 800 to Tk 700, and 20 Mbps from Tk 1,200 to Tk 1,100. The BTRC’s pricing overhaul stems from a comprehensive review of the internet supply ecosystem—from international submarine cables to ISPs—identifying opportunities to reduce costs at multiple levels.
Chairman Emdad ul Bari highlighted that falling international bandwidth prices and addressing uneven competition among operators enabled the commission to lower wholesale bandwidth costs by 15–25%, benefiting end users directly. The BTRC has also cracked down on malpractice involving differential pricing by International Terrestrial Cable operators and Internet Internet Gateways to ensure unified, fair rates.
Additionally, ISPs will implement a consumer compensation policy based on service disruptions, ensuring customers pay reduced bills if internet service is down for extended periods. The new tariff will remain effective for five years, with periodic reviews by BTRC to balance market demand and consumer interests.
