Nigeria’s Telecom Sector Hit by Over 30 Network Disruptions in May 2025 Amid Infrastructure Challenges

Nigeria’s telecommunications industry experienced more than 30 network outages in May 2025, primarily caused by fibre cuts, power failures, vandalism, and infrastructure theft, per data from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) Major Outage Reporting Portal. Major operators including MTN, Glo, Airtel, and 9Mobile suffered service interruptions affecting millions across several states.

Notably, Glo endured an over 8-hour outage on May 21 across five states due to equipment theft. MTN and Airtel faced widespread disruptions from fibre cuts and power outages in key areas such as Cross River, Lagos, Benue, and Rivers. Meanwhile, 9Mobile grappled with extended outages, including a 15-day power failure spanning April 29 to May 14 in parts of Kebbi and Sokoto.

These frequent disruptions underscore persistent infrastructure vulnerabilities and emphasize the need for enhanced security measures and stronger collaboration with civil authorities to ensure stable telecom connectivity nationwide.
