Saudi Arabia Launches Innovative eSIM Activation Service to Enhance Pilgrims’ Connectivity

Saudi Arabia has introduced a groundbreaking digital service allowing international pilgrims to activate eSIM cards instantly upon arrival through an app-based process combined with biometric verification. This innovative solution eliminates the need to visit physical stores, enabling seamless mobile connectivity from the moment pilgrims enter the Kingdom.

Developed through a collaborative effort among the Communications, Space, and Technology Commission (CST), the Ministry of Interior, and licensed telecom operators, the service utilizes the government’s Absher platform to securely verify identities and enable swift eSIM activation remotely. This initiative is especially timely given the millions of Muslims arriving for Hajj and Umrah, seasons marked by high demand for reliable mobile services.

With nearly 666,000 international pilgrims already in the Kingdom ahead of the upcoming Hajj, Saudi Arabia continues to streamline pilgrim services through flawless coordination among security, health, and transportation authorities. The new eSIM activation service further improves pilgrims’ experiences by ensuring continuous access to mobile networks essential for communication, navigation, and accessing event information.

This digital innovation aligns with global telecommunications trends favoring eSIM technology, which offers travelers flexible, physical SIM-free access to mobile networks and reduces roaming hassles. Saudi Arabia’s adoption of this technology highlights its commitment to modernizing services and solidifies its position as a leading destination for religious tourism.

As the number of pilgrims is expected to grow in coming years, Saudi Arabia’s advanced digital services will play a vital role in delivering a smooth, connected, and enriching pilgrimage experience for millions worldwide.
