Pakistan’s freelance training initiatives, led by Ignite, have generated $1.65 billion in revenue and trained 4.6 million students over 19 batches, offering 15 high-demand freelancing courses aimed at bolstering the digital economy. However, a National Assembly Standing Committee on IT and Telecommunication raised concerns over the gender imbalance, with only 28% female participation. Lawmakers urged Ignite to achieve at least 50% female representation to promote inclusive economic growth and digital innovation.
The committee requested a district-wise participation report from Balochistan to ensure equitable access and encouraged wider promotion of programs among women and girls in underserved regions to bridge the digital gender gap. Ignite also announced expanding its courses to 25, including new offerings in Artificial Intelligence and emerging technologies, enhancing youth skills for future jobs.
Separately, lawmakers criticized the absence of Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited’s (PTCL) CEO amid asset sale discussions, directing the company to disclose contract details and summon the CEO for the next session. The committee also confirmed the continuation of its Sub-Committee under Gohar Ali Khan to oversee IT and telecom sector developments.
