More than 100 students from 24 countries graduated from Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) during a ceremony in Abu Dhabi, marking a significant milestone for the world’s first dedicated AI university. The cohort included 91 master’s and 12 PhD graduates, with 20 Emiratis among them.
The graduates’ research covered diverse, cutting-edge topics such as Alzheimer’s detection, climate change modelling, and Arabic-language AI tools. Notable graduates include Daniel Gebre from Eritrea, who focused on making AI models more efficient for use in low-internet settings, and Umaima Rahman from India, whose PhD explored deep learning in medical imaging.
Yevheniia Kryklyvets from Ukraine celebrated her first official graduation ceremony after missing her undergraduate event due to war, highlighting the university’s collaborative and applied AI research environment.
MBZUAI, opened in 2020 as part of the UAE’s ambition to lead global AI development, offers programs in machine learning, computer vision, and natural language processing, with plans to expand into digital public health, decision science, arts and sciences, and engineering.
The UAE recently announced a $5 billion AI Campus with the US in Abu Dhabi, aimed at establishing one of the largest AI centers outside the US, reinforcing the country’s position as a global AI hub.
