On 28 May 2025, TechnoServe Inc., in collaboration with Millers for Nutrition, organized a workshop titled “Technology and Benefits of Introducing Fortified Wheat Flour in the Commercial Market” at Lakeshore Heights, Gulshan, Dhaka. The event gathered 46 participants from government agencies, development partners, and industry stakeholders to raise awareness about fortified wheat flour’s role in addressing micronutrient deficiencies, particularly Vitamin A, Iron, and Zinc, which severely affect women and children in Bangladesh.
Md. Guljer Ahmmed, TechnoServe’s Country Program Manager, emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts to expand food fortification. Chief guest Md. Jamal Hossain, Additional Director General of the Directorate General of Food, highlighted fortified wheat flour as a sustainable public health strategy ready for commercial expansion. Deputy Director of BSTI, SM Abu Sayed, underscored quality control and regulatory frameworks necessary for success.
Senior Food Fortification Specialist Md. Nayem Zobayer presented technological innovations and economic viability of wheat flour fortification, citing it as a scalable and cost-effective solution to combat micronutrient deficiencies.
An interactive session engaged flour millers, industry leaders, and private sector stakeholders who supported voluntary fortification and stressed strong collaboration among government and development partners for wider market adoption. Representatives from BASF, Müllen Chemie, WFP, Nutrition International, and GAIN contributed valuable insights.
Faria Yasmin, Chief Business Officer at ACI Foods Ltd and member of the Global Millers’ Advisory Group, emphasized the critical role of public-private partnerships and innovation in making fortified wheat flour accessible to all Bangladeshis.
The workshop concluded with a vote of thanks from Md. Guljer Ahmmed, reaffirming the shared commitment to scale up inclusive and sustainable food fortification initiatives. This event marks a key milestone in Bangladesh’s fight against micronutrient malnutrition through united government, private sector, and development partner efforts.
