Morocco Accelerates Digital Growth with Expanding Data Center Ecosystem and Tech Innovations

Morocco has rapidly embraced the digital era, prioritizing digital infrastructure in its 2020 roadmap released by the Agency for Digital Development. Since then, the government has implemented incentives such as tax cuts and exemptions under the National Charter of Investment to foster sector growth. A 2021 law mandating that sensitive data be hosted domestically sparked a wave of data repatriation, fueling a boom in local data centers.

Currently, most data centers are operated by telecom giants like Maroc Telecom and Inwi, as well as data center providers such as Medasys and N+One. Large banks tend to own their own centers, while smaller banks lease data storage. Regional competition drives varied incentives, with Casablanca-Settat and Rabat-Salé-Kénitra leading due to full internet penetration and reliable energy availability. Other regions are advancing too, exemplified by the $500 million data center project in Tetouan by American firm Iozera.

Doha Ammour, VP of International Business Development at N+ONE Datacenters, notes that site selection hinges on proximity to business hubs, infrastructure strength, and operational sustainability, explaining the concentration of centers in key urban areas.

Morocco’s digital momentum extends beyond data centers, with fintech, AI, and e-government initiatives like Digital Morocco 2030 featured prominently at the April 2025 Gitex Africa tech expo in Marrakech, which attracted over 1,400 exhibitors and 45,000 visitors from 130+ countries.

As the saying goes, “Data is the new oil,” yet unlike oil, data is limitless and self-replicating, driving continued demand for data services and infrastructure.
