Pakistan’s IT and Telecom Sector Shows Robust Growth in FY2025 with $2.8 Billion IT Exports and Expanding Digital Workforce

Pakistan’s Information Technology and Telecommunication sector delivered strong performance in fiscal year 2025, with IT exports rising to $2.825 billion—a 23.7% year-on-year increase—and freelancers contributing $400 million in remittances between July and March. The sector recorded a trade surplus of $2.429 billion, the highest among all service industries.

According to the Pakistan Economic Survey 2024-25, Pakistan ranks as the world’s second-largest provider of digital labor, with strengths in software development, clerical support, creative services, and more. Over 4.55 million trainings have been conducted under DigiSkills.pk, empowering freelancers—including over 50,000 overseas Pakistanis—and generating cumulative earnings of $1.65 billion up to December 2024.

The government has prioritized IT as a pillar of economic transformation under the E-Pakistan vision (URAAN), with over 30,000 registered IT and ITeS companies operating mainly from Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad/Rawalpindi, attracting top global clients and foreign direct investment (FDI).

To sustain growth, new initiatives include establishing 50 e-Rozgaar centers and training over 6,400 professionals in advanced technologies. The TechdestiNation campaign seeks to increase annual exports to $15 billion.

Telecom infrastructure expanded, with broadband subscribers reaching 147.2 million and total telecom users hitting 199.9 million by March 2025. Telecom revenues totaled Rs 803 billion, with data consumption surging to 27,897 petabytes, underscoring Pakistan’s digital connectivity progress.

Collaborative efforts like the China-Pakistan Joint Working Group on IT and investments in AI, cybersecurity, and quantum computing position the sector as a key driver of Pakistan’s transition to a knowledge-based, export-oriented economy.
